Bed bugs are ancient insects and have lived off hosts for a very long time. Studies have suggested that they originally fed off bats and then moved to humans. Bed bugs most likely got their name from feeding on humans while they sleep. They are found in virtually every place humans gather. Bed bugs are hitchhikers. People usually pick them up while traveling. Bed bugs will hide in suitcases, shoes, purses, backpacks.
Identification – What do bed bugs look like?
Bed bugs are small, flat, oval, brownish-red insects. They are about the size of an apple seed. They have six legs and two antennae. They are wingless and do not fly, but they can move quickly over floors and walls. Adult bed bugs are approximately 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch long. Bed bugs can live from months to years depending on the temperature and environment. Most live 6 to 12 months.
Habitat and Habits of bed bugs
Bed bugs are nocturnal blood suckers. They feed on humans at night. Therefore, they like to hide in bed frames, baseboards, furniture, and any other small crack or crevice near humans. Bed bugs usually take 5 to 10 minutes to engorge themselves with blood. After feeding they move to a secluded place and hide for 5 to 10 days. Bed bugs can live up to a year without feeding. They are very difficult to get rid of once infested.

Bed bugs prefer human blood, but will also feed off of other warm-blooded animals including dogs, cats, birds, bats, and rodents.
